NEW ORLEAN, OCT. 23 – Tyrone Hughes returns to 92- and 98-yard kickoffs for touchdowns as he sets two NFL records and draws another record today in the New Orleans Saints’ wild 37-34 win over Los Angeles Angles Rams, who provided some magic back of their own.
Hughes, who led the league in the second leg by punt and finished second in the warm-up second leg as a rookie last year, combined reruns between punt and kickoff in 347 yards, breaking the mark. 294 yards old held by two other people.
His return kicks at 304 yards broke the old mark of 294 yards. Two touchdowns are associated with a mark held by three others.
“I have the easiest part of being a returner and a starter,” says Hughes. “All you have to do is get back there, catch the ball and run. The hard work is there for the stops. They have to do the work and I get all the fun.”
Despite his return, the Saints almost blew it away. The Rams scored after Toby Wright’s clumsy 98-yard return in the second period and Robert Bailey’s record 103-yard return with 4:08 play remaining.
Bailey’s rare return out of the late zone comes after Tommy Barnhardt’s race set off for a clear comeback. The ball did not touch anyone and Saints players said they heard a whistle and confirmed the ball had hit the end line. But Bailey picked it up and sped back onto the field – even as some Saints were going on the sidelines – to hit 37-34.
Saints quarterback Jim Everett, 17-26 for 206 yards with one touch and no interception in his first game against his former teammates and gave New Orleans a 13-year commanding advantage minutes of ball time. And of course special teams made the win even more special.
“It’s a pretty weird game,” said Tom Newberry, the Rams’ defender, a nine-year veteran. “There’s a lot of points scored in weird ways.”
