This weekend, protesters in Seattle, protesting against police tyranny and brutality in the wake of the assassination of George Floyd in Minneapolis, occupied several residential areas in the city and declared it an “autonomous region”.

The American public is upset. While protests against racism and discrimination by security agencies against blacks continue in many cities across the country, another event similar to the violent death of Floyd took place.

An autopsy of 27-year-old Reishard Brooks, slain, found that death occurred from “shots from behind”, causing “organ injury and bleeding”.

South Carolina Democratic congressman James Claiborne said there was no need to use lethal weapons during the police meeting with Brooks.

He was searched, unarmed… and escaped. What do they think, where he can escape. God, you have his car, you can easily find it. But, no, you hurl bullets in his back, Claiborne said, the New York Times reported.

Just an hour before he was killed, Brooks simply fell asleep in his drive-in car in front of Wendy’s Sandwich Shop. Employees noticed a car with a person sleeping in it, expected access to other customers’ cars when taking orders, and called the police.

Upon arrival, the first minutes of communication between police and Brooks were normal. Video cameras mounted on the building show one of the officers waking Brooks. According to witnesses, he even showed them photos of his newborn daughter.

The footage shows how the situation becomes confusing after the drunk driving test, the police want to arrest Brooks, who begins to resist and escape. An electric shock was received from one of the police officers. While trying to escape, the officer electrocuted the suspect, the suspect turned around and wanted to electrocute him but still ran away, after which he was shot.

News of Brooks’ death on Saturday night sent thousands into the streets of Atlanta. The Wendy’s sandwich shop where the murder took place was set on fire and protesters blocked a highway. The situation in this part of the city remains tense.

Some Democratic lawmakers have called for emergency services reform, with activists calling for cuts and a halt to police funding.

The Atlanta police chief resigns, the officer who shot Brooks has been fired and faces first-degree murder charges. The Fulton County Attorney General criticized the officials’ response and said a decision on what to do next would be made on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in New York, there are protests that coincide with protests by groups of different sexual orientations – those celebrating June as LGBT Month and marching against discrimination.

Meanwhile, protesters in Seattle have declared the Capitol Hill Autonomous Region (CHAZ) before the state congress.

The area includes several neighborhoods and is inaccessible to the police there. City police chief Carmen Bess told Fox News that security forces are ready to “take over the area as soon as possible.” Seattle Mayor Jenny Ducran, a Democrat, said the people were “not a military junta” that had taken over the territory.

“They were at peace, we weren’t expecting a loving summer,” she told CNN.
