After falling into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo in a terrifying incident that ended with the 400-pound primate being shot dead, a 4-year-old boy was lucky to be alive.
The young toddler climbed past a barrier and fell into the gorilla cage about 12 feet away. The toddler was then snatched by a massive 17-year-old male gorilla and taken into a moat.
The endangered monkey dragged about the youngster for almost 10 minutes when the zoo’s Dangerous Animal Response Team came in and shot it.
It’s a depressing day for everyone. They had to make a difficult decision, but it was correct. Because they saved the life of that tiny kid, it might have been disastrous. It was not an easy decision to make.
What do you think? Although the gorilla may not have harmed the youngster, anything may happen in such a setting. The infant was quickly removed from the primate enclosure and transported to a nearby hospital. Initially, he was said to be in severe but not life-threatening condition.
It was the first time the zoo’s emergency response team had killed an animal in a life-threatening situation. The crew chose against using tranquillizer darts since incapacitating such a tremendous “agitated” animal may take several minutes. For decades, gorillas have been subjected to unchecked hunting, sickness, habitat destruction, and human conflict. Their populations have declined to the point where they are now classified as endangered, and another was shot down.
